Human Factors

Human Factors is an important element in the design of effective and safe systems. Early integration of Human Factors in the design and system life cycle promotes solutions that take account of human capabilities and limitations. The benefits include:

  • optimised performance
  • reduced error rates
  • enhanced usability
  • improved in-service performance
  • reduced whole-life costs

SEA has a strong team of Human Factors specialists covering the major aspects of Human Factors Integration (HFI), Design, Implementation, Test and Acceptance. The team has a wide range of capabilities covering Cognitive Psychology, Ergonomics, Human-System Integration, Human-Computer Interaction, development of performance assessment criteria, evaluation of technology options, interactive media, Task Analysis and Training Requirements definition and interpretation. The SEA Team is well acquainted with HFI guidance for Sea Systems having worked on the updates for STGP10 and 11 as well as Def Stan 00-025. Both sets of guidance and standards have been applied in practice extensively.

Our experience

The HF team has gained its experience over a number of relevant development programmes and research projects including:

  • Communications Coherency for Submarines (CCSM). The SEA Team provided HFI managerial and technical expertise to design, acceptance activities.

  • Computerised Information System (CIS). A set HF requirements were generated for the Remote Visual Surveillance Subsystem (RVSS) incorporated into the Subsystem Specification.

  • The VISTA programme which combines the disciplines of Human Factors and Synthetic Environments to research and solve problems in the domain of maritime engineering.

  • The DTI’s HUFCAR programme for the production, education and awareness campaign for the new regulations relating to civil aircraft cockpit equipment.

  • The development of the Future Lynx cockpit human computer interface requirements.
